We Seek It Out. It Is Rarely
A Great Distance
2025, Motion tracked projection
The image is a machine. We are both its subjects and conductors through continuous interaction, driven by its self-perpetuating design. Our collective gaze is sweeping and unfaltering—and double. The machine meets our gaze in the mirror. It feels natural, yet against our nature—a back and forth pull. Part of us resists the machine, while another part finds comfort in its captivity.
We have generated and perpetuated a kind of new nature; something to measure ourselves against and from which to derive rules. The machine sinks its teeth into our every movement and fleeting desire; taking measure, and embodying those desires. It responds (reflects) in kind. It has become nearly instinctual for us to engage with these systems. We seek it out. It is rarely a great distance.
