OF PLASTIC MATRIARCHS
2025, Oil on Canvas ,
64 x 48 inches
Reprise and denial lie heavily in the land of plastic matriarchs. They sit upright in reinforced plastic, drowning in Alabama sun and the jaundice of July. They stand on tired legs with straightened backs. They often do not waiver; they almost never lie.
With outstretched arms I’ll yield to a version much younger of myself.
I’ll fill up my pockets and shrink down into a child sized pool.
My fate is plasticized.
The code aligns my back.
The room smells like asphalt.
One day I’ll be sitting not so upright in lawn chairs of my very own, resisting the passage of time.
Always present, always attentive. I have a grit score of 4.7.
I have tired legs. My hope is not optimistic, but I feel it when I sit.
Sign on the plastic underline. We have more in common than we think.
