If left unattended, pearls simply occupy space in their host, neither impeding nor assisting the oyster. They merely sit, a lustrous piece of baggage to carry around within the walls of the shell. In its desire to consume, new irritants can fill the mollusk and re-engage the process that produces more pearls. No matter the quantity that fills the shell, the oyster is never actually sated on the gem, always ready to produce more if discomfort should strike it again.
Personally, I have never seen a solitary pearl. Perhaps I would cherish them more if I had.
